On May 11, 2010, the US Secretary of Transportation, Mr. Ray LaHood, visited the Yamanashi Maglev Test Line during his visit to Japan. Secretary LaHood took a test ride on Superconducting Maglev (SCMAGLEV) and experienced traveling at a speed of 500km/h after touring command center facilities and observing 500km/h running tests. After his ride, Secretary LaHood commented, "It's very fast," and told that he was impressed by the Japanese high-speed railroad system.
Through this test ride JR Central was able to show Secretary LaHood that SCMAGLEV has already achieved levels sufficient for commercial operation.
JR Central is planning for deployment of SCMAGLEV to several corridors including one between Washington DC and Baltimore in the US.
